The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence
I absolutely loved this book, it’ s one of the most moving, intelligent and funny books I’ve read. Alex is a wonderful character who you can’ t help but love. Gavin Extence deals with situations that could be considered farcical or maudlin in ways that are intelligent and moving without being saccharine. His characters are believable as well as archetypal; filling familiar roles within the story but surprising you with their reactions and motivations. The themes in the book are also dealt with intelligently, Extence clearly cares greatly for his characters but this hasn’t stopped him from putting them through their paces. Emotionally challenging, funny and at times incredibly tense this is an early contender for my book of the year and definitely an author to watch. -

We read in bed because reading is halfway between life and dreaming, our own consciousness in someone else’s mind.

Come pick up your copy, then head over to Neal Street for a song, a chat, and maybe a pawprint.

A fanastic evening was had by all on Thursday, 6 September when we were lucky enough to host US author Kevin Powers in conversation with Damian Barr. Critics are comparing Kevin’s novel The Yellow Birds, about the Iraq war, to the great works of war literature, including All Quiet on the Western Front, and the accolades are deserved. Kevin has also just been nominated for the Guardian First Book Award 2012.
We have a limited number of signed copies available in store, so do come on by!
